Fighting Injustice in Polepally SEZ

The main purpose of this blog is to inform the world about a historic struggle being waged by farmers belonging to 3 villages in Mahabubnagar district in the South-Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The state government has forcibly acquired about 1000 acres of land belonging to poor farmers of Polepally, Mudireddy Pally and Gundla Gadda Thanda. All these farmers are illiterate and belong to Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes and Backward Castes. In short, they were the poorest of the poor and the most vulnerable sections of our society.

The state government officials lied and threatened these hapless farmers and paid them a meagre amount of about Rs 18,000 per acre. Many farmers realised only half of this amount as they had to pay bribes at every stage to get this compensation.

What is shocking is that after acquisition, the lands were handed over to APIIC (Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation), which inturn allotted this land for a Pharma SEZ and started selling these very lands at Rs. 40,00,000. (This info was updated on 28th Aug 2008)

Farmers who started protesting this injustice were implicated in false cases and arrested. The agitation has now entered its fourth year. Till today, 42 farmers have died from either hunger, heartbreak or suicide.

From a time where no political party bothered about them, Polepally SEZ victims have now succeeded in capturing the attention of all major political parties in the state. The woes of these farmers are now being featured in all major regional and national media.

Polepally SEZ is a classic example of who is “sacrificing” for whose “development” in this country.

It is the responsibility of people like us to extend our solidarity to the spirited fightback of Polepally farmers.

దేశ చరిత్రలో ఒక చీకటి అధ్యాయం

మహబూబ్‌నగర్‌ జిల్లా జడ్చర్ల, బాలానగర్‌ మండలాల పరిధిలోని గ్రామాలైన ముదిరెడ్డిపల్లి, పోలేపల్లి, గుండ్లగడ్డ తాండల వద్ద నిర్మాణంలో ఉన్న ఫార్మాసెజ్ (Formulation SEZ) పై అక్కడి స్థానిక రైతుల పోరాటం బయటి ప్రపంచానికి తెలియజెప్పేందుకు ఉద్దేశించిన బ్లాగ్ ఇది.

నిరక్షరాస్యులైన స్థానిక రైతులను మభ్యపెట్టి, బెదిరించి వారివద్ద నుండి కారుచౌకగా భూమి లాక్కున్న రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం, అదే భూమిని ప్రైవేటు ఫార్మా కంపెనీలకు కొన్ని వందల రెట్ల ధరకు తెగనమ్మిన ఈ దారుణం స్వతంత్ర భారత దేశ చరిత్రలోనే ఒక చీకటి అధ్యాయం.

తమ భూమిని ఎందుకు లాక్కుంటున్నారని అడిగిన పాపానికి ఆ పేద రైతులపై కేసులు బనాయించి ఇక్కట్ల పాల్జేసింది మన రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం. నష్ట పరిహారంగా కొన్ని వేల రూపాయలు వారి మొహాన విదిలించి వారి భూముల్లో వారినే కూలివాళ్లుగా మార్చేసింది. ఈ అన్యాయంపై పోలేపల్లి ప్రాంత రైతులు గత మూడేళ్లుగా పోరాటం చేస్తూనే ఉన్నారు. ఈ పోరులో ఇప్పటికే అనేక మంది రైతులు ప్రాణాలు కోల్పోయారు.

ఈ గడ్డపై ఎవరి “అభివృద్ధి” కొరకు ఎవరు త్యాగం చేస్తున్నారో కళ్లకు కట్టినట్టు చూపిస్తుంది పోలేపల్లి సెజ్.

తమ భూమికొరకు అవిశ్రాంతంగా పోరుసల్పుతున్న పోలేపల్లి రైతుల పక్షాన బుద్ధిజీవులంతా నిలవాల్సిన తరుణమిది. లేకుంటే చరిత్ర మనల్ని ఎప్పటికీ క్షమించదు.
