Two-Day National Seminar on
Political Economy of Special Economic Zones (SEZs)

The Special Economic Zones Policy in the country had been formally introduced by the Govt. of India in April 2000. The theoretical genesis for the formation of these zones is the export-led growth strategy considering the need to enhance foreign investment and also to promote exports from the country. Further, the SEZs are expected to offer high quality infrastructure facilities and support services, besides allowing for the duty free import of capital goods and raw materials to make the domestic enterprises and manufacturers to be competitive globally. It would not have been possible without the support of many friends and more particularly the timely support and encouragement of Bharath Bhushan, Vidya Bhushan Rawat, Radha Reddy, Vanaja and Biju Mathew, who met Polepally team in the recent press meet and also visited the village once and continued to extend the support their struggle in all forms.

వేరే ఏ రకంగానూ దాన్ని ఆపలేకపోతే కనీసం చట్టాలలో ఏముందో తెలుసుకొని, తగిన జాగ్రత్తలు పాటిస్తే కొంతవరకైనా మీకు న్యాయం జరిగే అవకాశం ఉంటుంది.

భూసేకరణ జరుగుతున్నది 1894 నాటి భూసేకరణ చట్టం కింద. ఆ చట్టం ‘ప్రజా ప్రయోజనం’ పేరుతో ప్రజల భూములనూ, ఇతర స్థిరాస్తులనూ సేకరించే అధికారం ప్రభుత్వానికిస్తుంది. అయితే ఏ అవసరం కోసమైతే భూమి సేకరిస్తున్నారో అది ‘ప్రజా ప్రయోజనం’ కిందకి వస్తుందా, ఒకవేళ వచ్చినా మీ భూమికాక వేరే ప్రత్యామ్నాయాలు ఉన్నాయా అనే విషయంలో అభ్యంతరం చెప్పే, ప్రత్యామ్నాయాలనూ సూచించే అవకాశం మీకు ఉంది. వాటి గురించి ఆలోచించమనీ, అభ్యంతరాలకు జవాబు చెప్పమనీ ప్రభుత్వం పైన ఒత్తిడి పెట్టగల అవకాశమూ మీకు ఉంది. As many of you may be aware, the Government of AP came out with the GO 34, aimed at developing the coastal areas of AP right from Srikakulam to Nellore districts in an area covering 972 kms, into a Coastal Industrial Corridor. The Government sees this as its most Prestigious Project aimed at accelerating Industrial Growth and claims to “Develop” the region in the bargain.

Opposing the Coastal Industrial Corridor, the National Alliance for People’s Movements (NAPM), is organizing a Dharna on 25th August, 2008, at Dharna Chowk, Indira Park , Hyderabad , from 10am to 2pm.

COMMITTEE AGAINST THE FORMATION of INDUSTRIAL COASTAL CORRIDOR

Dear People!  Democrats!!

Let us unitedly oppose the coastal corridor which destroys the livelihood of thousands of Fishermen, Daliths, Ryots, and Coolies and at the same time smashing the production of food grains, sea foods, and thus adversely affects the lives of the poor people. This Government is not caring for the public opinion and the opposition of the Fishermen, Dalits, Farmers, and Coolies, artisans. We oppose the issue of G.O. No. 34 against the people’s aspiration and giving consent for formation of coastal corridor and we the Committee against formation of Industrial Coastal Corridor oppose it tooth and nail.  How the rulers and officials did give shape to this coastal corridor which is anti-people? The Govt. which came into power on the basis of big promises of the welfare of the poor people and claiming to be the harbingers of Indira Raj , is pushing  the life of poor people to extinction through  S.E.Zs, Pharma Parks, Chemical Industries, and Industrial Parks.

Condemn Land Grabbing from poor farmers in the name of SEZ in Polepally

Background

Displaced and harassed farmers of Polepally village of Jedcharla Block in Mahboobnagar District have been struggling since five years. They are against forced acquisition of their lands by Andhra Pradesh Infrastructure and Industrial Corporation (APIIC).

The APIIC, an undertaking of AP government first identified an area of 1000 acres of land in three villages viz., Polepally, Mudureddypally and Gundlagadda Thanda in Jedcharla Block of Shamshabad way back in 2001. Read the rest of this entry »

Andhra Pradesh (India) state government has forcibly acquired about 1000 acres of farm land at Polepally in Mahabubnagar district 4 years back and is trying to establish Formulations (Pharma) SEZ in these lands. More than 70% of the land is left unused till date. Read the rest of this entry »
