Fighting Injustice in Polepally SEZ

The agitation against Polepally land acquisition which has been going on for the past 4 years has entered a decisive phase. Polepally farmers have used all forms of democratic protests to make their case heard. They have organized dharnas in front of MRO office, District Collector’s office and also APIIC head office in Hyderabad. In a novel protest form, 13 Polepally farmers have contested the recent Telangana Assemby By-election. 
 
From a stage where no one took notice of their agitation, Polepally has now reached a stage where every major political party, newspaper and television channel started supporting and extending solidarity to
the movement.
 
The farmers have now decided to organize a Bhu Satyagraham in front of the Pharma SEZ (being set up by APIIC with partnership of Aurobindo Pharma and Hetero Drugs) from the 25th of September 2008. This is going to be an indefinite protest until the farmers’ demands are met.

Demands:

• To scrap the Polepally SEZ and return the land to original land owners
• To compensate for the crop loss and the agony caused in the past 4 years
• To prosecute all the erring beaurocrats and public representatives who are involved in this land acquisition

Polepally SEZ Vyathireka Aikya Vedika requests everyone to extend their solidarity to this struggle.

Visited Polepally today with Vanaja and Vipul. Both are making documentary film of the struggle process. Their interest is inspiring. They plan to make a film of the struggle challenging the SEZ lords by people who are not sure of next meal. It will be a story of resistance movements in India. An account of heroic people’s challenge to globalization that’s making our society numb like killer tsunami.

Every organization measures its success by the revenue it earns from sale of its products or services. But here is an organization in the South Indian State of Andhra Pradesh which makes money by selling off its own assets. And what’s more, all the ‘assets’ of this organization were grabbed from poor peasants forcibly.

Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) is a state owned organization set up to promote industries in Andhra Pradesh. APIIC was an ailing public sector undertaking until recent times. Then suddenly, one fine mornining the bosses of APIIC got an ingenious idea to make a quick buck. Sell its assets! So, APIIC dug up its old files to know where all it has acquired land for ‘public purpose’ and then started selling these lands.

For the past one week Polepally is witnessing all sorts of high level dramas. The sole purpose of all these dramas is to weaken and split the unity of agitating farmers by offering them petty gifts. Mr. Mallu Ravi the local MLA  and his karyakarthas are visiting Polepally everyday and are luring people with attractive offers.

Yesterday Polepally struggle committee had a meeting. Me, Madhu, Mr. Charles Wesley Meesa and Mr. Surender (Sharmika Shakti Sanghatan, Mahaboobnagar) attended the meeting.

Members of all caste groups in the affected villages joined the meeting. Interestingly, some young boys from youth organisations were also present.

Pictures from Polepally SEZ. The Andhra Pradesh State government has forcibily acquired about 1000 acres of farm land from poor, illiterate dalit and tribal farmers for setting up an SEZ. These are some pictures telling their stories.

The Comptroller and Auditor General’s report for year 2007 has severely criticised the Andhra Pradesh state government for misleading the central government with respect to the Polepally (Jadcherla) Pharma SEZ. The report validates the claim of protesting Polepally farmers that the state government has not acted in a transparent manner in land acquisition for this SEZ.

గెలుపు తారుమారు చేసిన సెజ్‌ ఓట్లు

(ఆన్‌లైన్‌, మహబూబ్‌నగర్‌) పోలేపల్లి పోరు గెలిచింది. ఎన్నికలలో విజయా లు ఎలా ఉన్నా పోలేపల్లి సెజ్‌ బాధితుల పోరాటం నెగ్గింది. బాధితులు ఓడినా సమస్యకు పరిష్కారం దొరికింది. మహబూబ్‌నగర్‌ జిల్లా జడ్చర్ల ఉప ఎన్నికలను సెజ్‌ సమస్య కుదిపేసింది. అభ్యర్థుల గుండెల్లో రైళ్లు పరుగెత్తించింది. అనుకున్నట్లుగానే సమస్య గెలిచి ప్రధాన అభ్యర్థుల గెలుపును తారుమారు చేసింది. తమ జీవితాలను రోడ్డుకీడ్చిన సెజ్‌ను ఎత్తివేయాలని, తమ జీవితాలకు మేలు చేయాలని పోలేపల్లి గ్రామాలకు చెందిన సెజ్‌ బాధితులు 14 మంది జడ్చర్ల ఉప ఎన్నికల్లో పోటీ చేశారు. పోలేపల్లి, గుండ్లగడ్డ తండాకు చెందిన 200 ఎకరాల భూమిని ఫార్మా సెజ్‌కు కేటాయించారు. దీనికి పరిహారం కూడా తక్కువ మొత్తంలోనే చెల్లించారు. గ్రోత్‌సెంటర్‌ కోసం తీసుకున్న భూమిని సెజ్‌కు కేటాయించారు.

ముఖ్యమంత్రి పర్యటన కోసం ఎన్నికల కోడ్‌ ఉల్లంఘన

వారంతా.. ప్రత్యేక ఆర్థిక మండలి(సెజ్‌) బాధితులు.. అరకొర పరిహారంతో తమ భూములను లాక్కొని.. జీవనోపాధిని దెబ్బతీసిన సర్కారుపై నిరసన గళం విప్పిన అతి సామాన్యులు. అందివచ్చిన ఉప ఎన్నికలను అస్త్రంగా చేసుకొని.. తమకు జరిగిన అన్యాయాన్ని ఎలుగెత్తి చాటడానికి ఎన్నికల బరిలో దూకారు.. వినూత్న శైలిలో ఊరూవాడా ప్రచారం చేపట్టారు. ఇదే పాలకులకు కంటగింపుగా మారింది. తమ సమస్యను ముఖ్యమంత్రికి ఏకరువు పెట్టుకునేందుకు సిద్ధమైన వారిపై పోలీసు బలగాన్ని ప్రయోగించారు. వారి నిరసనపై ఉక్కుపాదం మోపారు. ఎన్నికల కోడ్‌ను దర్జాగా ఉల్లంఘించి.. అభ్యర్థులను అపహరించారు. మహబూబ్‌నగర్‌ జిల్లా జడ్చర్ల ఉప ఎన్నికల బరిలో నిలిచిన పోలేపల్లి సెజ్‌ బాధితులను శనివారం పోలీసులు నిర్బంధించారు. ఈ సందర్భంగా ఓ అభ్యర్థి సృహ తప్పి పడిపోయారు. ముఖ్యమంత్రి పర్యటన కోసం సాగిన ఈ అక్రమ నిర్బంధంపై సర్వత్రా విమర్శలు వెల్లువెత్తుతున్నాయి.

జడ్చర్ల నుంచి న్యూస్‌టుడే ప్రత్యేక ప్రతినిధి

కొన్నేళ్ల క్రితం రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం పండ్ల తోటలకు జాగా కావాలంటూ పోలేపల్లిలో పాదం మోపింది. తొలి అడుగు ఆస్తుల మీద, మలి అడుగు నిర్వాసితుల బతుకుల మీద వేసింది. ఇటీవల పోలేపల్లి శివారు గుండ్లగడ్డ తండావాసి ఒకరు మరణించాక తెలిసింది. మూడో అడుగు చావు మీద పడిందని. అంత్యక్రియలకు ఆరు అడుగుల జాగా కూడా లేదని! ఉప ఎన్నికల వేడిలో ప్రస్తుతానికి చావు సమస్య పరిష్కారమైనా బతుకు సమస్య ఇంకా అలాగే ఉంది.

మే 29 నాడు జరగనున్న జడ్చర్ల ఉప ఎన్నికల్లో 13 మంది సెజ్ బాధిత రైతులు పోటీకి నిలబడ్డారు. తమకు జరిగిన అన్యాయం బయటి ప్రపంచానికి చాటడానికి, అన్ని రాజకీయ పార్టీలూ తమను ఎలా మోసం చేశాయో వెల్లడించడానికే ఆ రైతులు ఈ ఎన్నికల్లో పోటీ చేస్తున్నారు.

ఈయన పేరు బాలు. మహబూబ్‌నగర్‌ జిల్లా జడ్చర్ల వద్ద పోలేపల్లి రైతు. 16 ఎకరాల ఆసామి. ప్రత్యేక ఆర్థిక మండలి కోసం తన భూమిని సేకరించడాన్ని ప్రశ్నించినందుకు ప్రభుత్వం ఇతడిని అరెస్టుచేసి జైలుకు పంపింది. అవమాన భారంతో కుంగిపోయి మరణించాడు. ఇతడే కాదు.. పాతిక మందికిపైగా రైతులు ఇలా భూసేకరణకు బలయ్యారు. రైతులను తమ పొలంలోనే కూలీలుగా మార్చేసి వారి బతుకులను ఛిద్రం చేసిన ఓ ప్రత్యేక ఆర్థిక మండలిపై న్యూస్‌టుడే ప్రత్యేక కథనం.
