CPI threatens to stall Polepalli SEZ

‘Poor given only Rs. 9,000 compensation against the promised 18,000’

HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India (CPI) State council has threatened to stall the Greenpark SEZ at Polepalli near Jadcherla in Mahabubnagar district, unless the government takes steps to set right ‘injustice’ done to locals in the distribution of assigned lands and payments made to them.

K. Narayana, party secretary, in a statement here said during a visit to the area on Thursday, he found that only Rs. 9,000 of the promised Rs. 18,000 was received by the poor, whose assigned lands were taken away and the balance was pocketed by middlemen. He demanded an enquiry into this issue and steps to rectify the ‘injustice’.

The CPI leader also wanted allotment of 10 per cent land, job assurance and payment of current prices to the poor for 25 acres taken over for the leather park.

There are altogether 66 SEZs in AP approved so far with an area of 8020 Hectares. From the official source “Ministry of Commerce & Industry Department of Commerce” Website.

The details are interesting and reveal that it is tip of the iceberg. For instance the data on Polepally SEZ mentions that 101.17 Ha has been allotted to APIIC in Rajapur & Polepally villages of Balanagar and Jedcharla mandals for Pharmaceutical Formulation SEZ. While the reality is that about 1000 acres is acquired from the villages causing 42 deaths so far

What is the extent of land acquisition in other SEZs is known to the people affected in each of the 66 SEZ areas … but NOT TO REST OF US !  What Should we do?

Background

Displaced and harassed farmers of Polepally village of Jedcharla Block in Mahboobnagar District have been struggling since five years. They are against forced acquisition of their lands by Andhra Pradesh Infrastructure and Industrial Corporation (APIIC).

The APIIC, an undertaking of AP government first identified an area of 1000 acres of land in three villages viz., Polepally, Mudureddypally and Gundlagadda Thanda in Jedcharla Block of Shamshabad way back in 2001.
