Telugu Desam Party seeks white paper on land allocation

POLEPALLI (Mahbubnagar Dt.): The Telangana Rashtra Samiti and the Left parties have threatened to block production at Hetero Drugs and Aurobindo Pharma units which were allotted land in the Special Economic Zone here pending payment of adequate compensation to farmers who “sacrificed” their lands for the project.

The main Opposition, Telugu Desam, demanded that the government release a white paper on the allotment of lands made to various industries and the employment potential created.

Representatives of the TDP, TRS, Praja Rajyam, CPI (M), CPI and Lok Satta staged a “maha dharna” here on Tuesday in protest against the ‘forcible acquisition’ of land from farmers.

Concern expressed

TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao, TDP Parliamentary Party leader K. Yerran Naidu, PR spokesman Parakala Prabhakar, CPI (M) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu, his CPI counterpart K. Narayana, who participated in the dharna, expressed concern over the way the government agencies such as the APIIC were acting like “real estate brokers.” Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao requested the Left parties to appoint a committee to study land allocation made through the APIIC as 90 per cent of the land was being misused. The SEZs were turning out to be “special exploitation zones” where only lands owned by poor were targeted.

Mr. Naidu alleged that the projects launched by the government were aimed at benefiting the close aides of the powers that be and Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was adopting a “dictatorial attitude” in doling out huge tracts of land to industry. Mr. Prabhakar lamented that while people depend on the government in the event of problems, they were forced to “protect” themselves from the government under the present dispensation.

Mr. Raghavulu demanded that the government revise the compensation that was offered to the affected farmers besides ensuring that they were given jobs cards for providing employment in the industry that was coming up on their lands. Dr. Narayana criticised the Chief Minister for passing the blame on to the TDP to suit his convenience.
