VISAKHAPATNAM: An effort is being made to bring onto one platform people who are displaced due to various projects, SEZs and industries in the State to wage a joint struggle to ensure they are not evacuated from their lands and their livelihood and natural wealth are protected.

The Bhoonirvasitula Porata Ikya Sanghatana (BPIS) would organise a convention in Hyderabad on December 27 and 28 to provide a platform for all the affected persons to exchange their views and experiences and to chalk out an action plan, said sanghatana’s State conveners – Madhu Kagula and Surepalli Sujata – at a press conference here on Saturday.

More than one crore people were being displaced due to various projects and industries.

The parties had ignored the people’s needs and demands and only took up issues that suited their conveniences and agenda, they said, and added that this had necessitated a joint struggle.

Fishermen, farmers, girijans and others who were going to be affected by the coastal corridor, PCPIR, bauxite mining in Visakha Agency area, SEZs, the Gangavaram port, coal mining in four north Telangana districts and the Polavaram project were saying that they had no belief in the rehabilitation programme being offered and wanted that they be allowed to continue their respective activities. “But the government seems to be not listening to them,” they said.

At the end of the convention, a ‘Hyderabad declaration’ would be released, explaining the feelings of the displaced and the programme they would conduct to protect themselves.

In Visakhapatnam, the sanghatana was being supported by the Stree Shakti Mahila Sangham, the Patriotic and Democratic Movement (PDM), the APCLC, the Kula Nirmulana Porata Samiti, Virasam and other organisations.

District secretary of Stree Shakti V.R. Jhansi and PDM district convener T. Bhanu Prakash also spoke.
