Special economic zones are touted as the new engines of growth, but they are also where the law seems to be suspended, says Asha Menon

It’s called a zone, an area of special activity, and last year it grew at 92 per cent. The zone is still small at 676.8 square kilometres, but what it makes it so different is that many of our laws simply don’t operate within its confines. Curiously, they have been suspended at the initiative of the government itself. Welcome to the Special Economic Zone, where some of India’s leading edge industries are establishing themsel­ves.
